چکیده

Abstract Year-to-year variability in CO 2 fluxes can yield insight into climate-carbon cycle relationships, a fundamental yet uncertain aspect of the terrestrial carbon cycle. In this study, we use global observations from NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite for years 2015–2019 and geostatistical inverse model to evaluate 5 interannual (IAV) its relationships with environmental drivers. OCO-2 launched late 2014, specifically IAV during time period when are available. We then compare inferences state-of-the-art process-based models (terrestrial biosphere model, TBMs). Results suggest that tropical grasslands biome (including grasslands, savanna, agricultural lands within tropics) makes contributions year study comparable forests, result differs majority TBMs. Furthermore, existing studies disagree on variables drive period, analysis using suggests both temperature precipitation make contributions. TBMs, by contrast, tend estimate larger usually relative extra-tropics. With said, TBMs show little consensus magnitude different regions IAV. further find wide range responses annual anomalies precipitation, these across most have than inferred OCO-2. Overall, findings highlight large uncertainties estimates recent provide an avenue evaluating processes against

The Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) mission

The Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) mission will make the first global, space-based measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) with the precision, resolution, and coverage needed to characterize CO2 sources and sinks on regional scales. The measurement approach and instrument specifications were determined through an analysis of existing carbon cycle data and a series of observing syste...

Global Characterization of CO2 Column Retrievals from Shortwave-Infrared Satellite Observations of the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 Mission

The global characteristics of retrievals of the column-averaged CO2 dry air mole fraction, XCO2, from shortwave infrared observations has been studied using the expected measurement performance of the NASA Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) mission. This study focuses on XCO2 retrieval precision and averaging kernels and their sensitivity to key parameters such as solar zenith angle (SZA), s...
